New Water Heater Regulations Are Coming: How to Prepare Before Options Get Limited
Big changes are coming to the plumbing industry, and they may affect your next water heater replacement. New federal regulations will begin rolling out soon, limiting the types of systems homeowners can install in the future. If you’ve been considering upgrading your water heater, now is the time to start planning.
What’s Changing?
New efficiency regulations begin in October 2026
for commercial systems and in May 2029
for residential ones. Once these rules take effect, traditional water heaters larger than 35 gallons
will no longer be allowed unless they’re heat pump models.
Heat pump water heaters can be a great option, but they aren’t the right fit for every home. If you prefer a larger traditional tank, replacing your system before the deadline will give you more flexibility and more choices.
Why Planning Ahead Matters
Waiting until your water heater fails can limit your options—especially once the new rules take effect. Planning ahead ensures you get the system that works best for your home, your budget, and your hot water needs.
